Sarah Palin slams Donald Trump for Carrier deal, calls it 'crony capitalism'

The Wall Street Journal editorial board on Thursday blasted President-elect Donald TrumpDonald TrumpFormer Defense secretary says he doesn't expect job in Trump administration Trump makes history with phone call to Taiwan leader The nomination of Tom Price and the cost of optimal medical care MORE, calling his deal to keep almost 1,000 from moving to Mexico from a Carrier plant in Indianapolis a "shakedown". Though Carrier is still planning to fire over a thousand of their employees, his ability to retain the thousand jobs was notable - but not free from scrutiny. The first thing that most people, including Sarah Palin, have taken issue with is the possibility that it could fit within the mold of "crony capitalism", or in other words, lop-sided deals that favor one company over its competition in the United States marketplace that fuels a capitalist economy. Republicans oppose this, remember? Palin also referred to Trump's deal as "crony capitalism" and stated that the Republican Party is dedicated to supporting competition "on a level playing field".

Palin was a stern defender of Trump throughout the GOP primary and his campaign, but in her op-ed she joins the chorus of skeptics calling for Trump and his team to make full details of the Carrier deal public.

In an op-ed published Friday by the Young Conservatives, Palin (who notes the terms of Trump's deal with Carrier remain unclear) condemns a deal that sees "politicians picking and choosing recipients of corporate welfare" as "a hallmark of corruption" and "socialism". Chuck Jones, head of the Steelworkers local, told The Huffington Post's Arthur Delaney that if Trump had consulted him, he would have asked for the president-elect's help saving the jobs at Rexnord as well. Palin implied that the Solyndra deal, with all of its ramifications, is very similar to the deal with Carrier that Trump claims he brokered all on his own.
