Pennsylvania McDonald's franchisee who created Big Mac dies

His company, M&J Management, is now a four-generation family business that has operated McDonald's restaurants for more than 60 years. In the end, his double-decker wasn't just a bigger burger.

In 2012, a corporate chef for McDonald's demonstrated, in a video, how to make the Big Mac Special Sauce, using mayonnaise, sweet pickle relish, yellow mustard, white wine vinegar, garlic powder, onion powder and paprika. Indeed, the Big Mac is still so popular that last year McDonald's Sweden launched a shop dedicated to the burger, and McDonald's sells around 550 million Big Macs in the USA alone every year.

The rest is history: the Big Mac went on to become a symbol of American culture and capitalism, was accused of felling rainforests and contributed to unknown quantities of myocardial infarctions. And in a 23-year-old Associated Press interview, Delligatti said it took him two years to convince McDonald's corporate leaders to try the Big Mac concept. The sandwich also has its own museum in North Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, which was opened in 2007 and features the largest Big Mac statue in the world.

Deadly storms add to drought, flood and fires plaguing South
The National Weather Service said three people in the Jackson County community of Rosalie were killed by a suspected tornado. Almost 5,000 homes lost power in Cullman and Winston counties, but most had been restored by Wednesday afternoon.

According to Delligatti's family he went on to own 48 McDonald's restaurants. 'The bulb was already there.

We thought now would be a good time to look at Big Macs around the world... He was 98. The death was confirmed by his son Michael.

Delligatti also pioneered the hotcakes and sausage meal to cater to steelworkers who wanted to get a hot breakfast after working the overnight shift at the steel plant. The firm relented, but while it says it has since sold billions of the sandwiches, it admits Delligatti never received a penny in royalties. Jim, we thank and will forever remember you. The Big Mac Index was invented by The Economist in 1986 as a lighthearted way of measuring the purchasing power parity (PPP) between two currencies. "Mr. Delligatti acknowledged that the Big Mac was derived from double-deck hamburgers made popular by rival fast-food restaurants". Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Eleanor Carmody Delligatti of Fox Chapel; a son from his first marriage, James Delligatti of Fox Chapel; a son from his second marriage, Michael F. Delligatti of Wexford, Pa.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Mr. Delligatti's funeral will be held Saturday at St. Joseph's Parish in O'Hara.
