Clinton, Trump hope to win Hispanic, black votes

Nationally, Clinton leads among Latinos by with 67 percent of the vote, against 19 percent for Trump, according to a new Univision/Washington Post poll.

Fifty-two percent of eligible Latino voters live in California, New York and Texas, which are not swing states.

Clinton, trying to both demonstrate confidence and motivate Democrats to vote, acknowledged that the election has posed a hard choice for many Americans.

At least 58 percent of the Hispanics surveyed said they trust Clinton to do a better job handling the economy, handling the threat of terrorism, immigration reform and that she has the better temperment for the presidency. Counting voters who were certain of their choice, who might change their pick, or who considered themselves undecided yet were leaning toward a certain candidate, 74 percent were in the Clinton camp and 14 percent aligned with Trump.

Gabriel Sanchez of Latino Decisions broke down numbers that paint the picture of a growing and energized Latino electorate that is out to stop Trump.

In 2008, Barack Obama won 76 percent of the Nevada Latino vote.

TV has more LGBTQ characters than ever, GLAAD reports
And though the number of black series regulars has hit a new high at 20 percent, only 38 percent of those characters are women. GLAAD reports that lesbian representation "decreased dramatically" from 33 percent last year to 17 percent this year.

In addition, Latinos tend to vote in smaller numbers than the rest of the population.

Latino turnout could be the difference maker for Clinton in swing states like Nevada, North Carolina and Florida. If Latinos turn out massively for Clinton in these three states, that could make her the next US president. Although they make up 38 percent of the state's population, Latinos account for only 10 percent of its mayors and county judges.

This year's election is viewed as more important than previous contests by 78 percent of Hispanic likely voters, and overall enthusiasm remains high. A school board election in a heavily Hispanic precinct earlier this year had turnout of just 2 percent.

And yet, instead of engaging Latino voters, Republicans have driven them away with anti-immigrant policy proposals, the report says. By contrast, in congressional races, 86 percent of Republican Latinos support the party's candidate in their district; 90 percent of Latino Democrats support their party's congressional candidate. Traditionally, in American politics, it is extremely hard for the same party to win three elections in a row.

Knowing that she enjoyed strong support among Hispanics starting in the primary season, Clinton's general-election campaign adopted an aggressive bilingual, digital-first general outreach strategy that targets younger Hispanics on Facebook, Snapchat and other digital platforms with predominantly English advertising.
