Wawrinka ousted, Murray struggles at ATP Paris Masters

Murray, a victor in Beijing, Shanghai and Vienna in his past three events, will continue his assault on Djokovic when he faces Lucas Pouille for a place in the quarterfinals.

Pouille was then broken by Murray before he held his own serve to take a 3-0 lead as he attempted to snuff out the Frenchman's resistance.

That looked highly unlikely when a tired Murray faced two break points at 5-5 in the deciding set against an inspired opponent, but the Scot held on and ground out a 6-3 6-7 (5/7) 7-5 victory.

All the talk at the Paris Masters has focused on Andy Murray and his bid to become world No. 1, but Novak Djokovic appears to be in no mood to relinquish top spot in the men's rankings.

He will meet compatriot John Isner in the next round after the latter halted the run of German qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff, winning 6-4, 6-7 (4/7), 6-3.

The Wimbledon champion now faces a quick turnaround before taking on 13th-seeded Frenchman Lucas Pouille on Thursday.

With an incredibly small lead and only six wickets in hand, the first hour will decide if Pakistan are in with a chance. Earlier, a lot depended on the two overnight batsmen Sarfraz Ahmed and Azhar Ali to build a big lead for Pakistan .

Andy Murray has claimed a comfortable 6-3 6-0 victory against Lucas Pouille to reach the last eight of the Paris Masters.

He next plays another of the men in contention, David Goffin, who was a 7-6 6-3 victor over France's Nicolas Mahut, while Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeated Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-3 6-4.

Following successive titles in Beijing, Shanghai and Vienna, Murray could overtake Djokovic at the top of the world rankings if results go his way in the French capital.

Japan's Kei Nishikori cruised into the third round with a 6-2 7-5 win over Serbian Viktor Troicki as the race for places at the ATP Tour Finals gathered pace.

He will now take on Croatian Marin Cilic, who ousted Belgian David Goffin in straight sets, in the last-eight.

"The goal wasn't to get to number one this year, but if it happens that's great".

In the day's other matches, Ukrainian fourth seed Elina Svitolina also secured a semi-final place with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Russia's Elena Vesnina, and France's Caroline Garcia beat Samantha Stosur of Australia 6-4, 6-3.
