Ontario's relaxed rules for wine sales at grocery stores take effect

Starting today, wine will be on shelves in up to 70 grocery stores. Previously, it was only sold at LCBO or Wine Rack stores, farmers' markets or vineyards.

With today's launch, according to the province's website, that number has increased to 130 grocery stores across Ontario now selling beer and cider with 67 of those also allowed to carry wine.

Ontario's finance minister, Charles Sousa, made the announcement in Toronto. This move is part of the province's move to sell more booze in grocery stores.

Ontario maintains a strong commitment to social responsibility.

"Opening up this new retail channel for wine producers will also help encourage business to thrive while delivering economic growth and job creation in Ontario's beverage alcohol, agriculture and tourism sectors". "So grocery stores are required to reserve shelf space for wine produced by small wineries, which creates a win-win-win scenario", he added.

The government conducted extensive industry consultations to define "a fair and socially responsible model for beer, wine and cider sales in grocery stores".

The provincial agency said there are as many as 3,000 new cases of cancer linked to alcohol use every year - particularly cancers of the mouth, esophagus, liver, colorectal tract and breast.

Under previous rules, the sale of wine at Ontario grocery stores was limited to kiosks set apart from other shelving.

Wine can be sold in maximum four-litre containers.
