Nebraska, Iowa place in top third in national science test

Compared to 2009, the a year ago NAEP assessed those grades in science, the number of Oklahoma students who scored at or above proficient is up 6 percentage points, from 28 percent, in fourth grade and 3 points, from 25 percent, in eighth grade.

Across the nation, science scores remained flat for seniors and showed modest progress for fourth- and eighth-graders.

The new report comes just a few days after Alabama's new State School Superintendent said we are confronting a K-12 math crisis.

Thirty-six percent of North Carolina fourth grade students scored at the Proficient level or above, up from 30 percent in 2009.

The National Assessment Governing Board and NCES announced the results at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. My guess is people are simply focusing a little more on science than they were in 2009, driven by their personal feeling that grasping science is important, and will be increasingly so as the economy evolves.

Among eighth-graders, 31 percent in Georgia had scores rated proficient, compared to 33 percent nationally. "We don't interpret this as being grade level". In both fourth and eighth grade science the gap in achievement scores between white and African-American students narrowed, and the gap tightened between white and Latino students in fourth grade. The state's 2015 results maintained the unprecedented growth with a new class of students, proving the gains were real. In 2015 that was cut to only a four-point lead. New Hampshire eighth-graders were second at 165 and Vermont third at 163. For both grades 4 and 8, the scale scores were set ranging from 0 to 300.

Scores from the 2015 National Assessment of Educational Progress, or NAEP, released Thursday show 43 percent of Minnesota's fourth-graders and 45 percent of its eighth-graders were proficient on the science test.

The Nation's Report Card, also known as the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students in the United States know and can do in various subject areas.

The standardized tests ― sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education and administered by the National Center for Education Statistics ― are meant to measure how groups of students are performing against each other. The achievement gap between white and Hispanic students showed a 7 point drop since 2009. That's down from a 5-point gap in 2011. The percentage of Nevada eighth grade students at or above proficient is 27 percent and this is a significant change from 2009 of seven percentage points.

"I think the teachers are very happy that we're seeing growth", he said. Minnesota and MA eighth-graders' scores averaged 162.
