Johnson & Johnson ordered to pay £58 million in baby powder cancer case

Johnson & Johnson has been ordered to pay $70m ($57m) of damages by a United States jury following allegations that prolonged use of its baby powder caused a ovarian cancer. He insists that studies indicate that women who use talc regularly on their genital area are 40% more likely to develop ovarian cancer.

A local doctor we talked to says sweating is toxins released from your body, so lessen your toxins by drinking water, exercising and eating right. "Three juries in a row have now found that the company did not do enough to warn the public about the ovarian cancer risk potentially associated with the long-term, genital application of products like Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower", says Sandy A. Liebhard, a partner at Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective medical devices, drugs and consumer products. "We are guided by the science, which supports the safety of Johnson's Baby Powder", she said in a statement.

Earlier this year, two other lawsuits filed in St. Louis against the same company resulted in jury verdicts awarding the plaintiffs a combined $127 million.

Overall, ovarian cancer is the fifth most deadly cancer among women.

While juror Billie Ray, 76, felt that Johnson & Johnson products should feature a warning label to allow customers to decide whether they want to use the talc.

Giannecchini's case was consolidated under the caption Tiffany Hogans, et al. v. Johnson & Johnson, et al, case number 1422-CC09012-01, in Missouri's 22nd Judicial Circuit in St. Louis.

This year, an estimated 22,280 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the US, according to the American Cancer Society, and about 14,240 will die. The $72 million award was granted in February to relatives of a woman who died of ovarian cancer, and the $55 million award to an ovarian cancer survivor.

A St. Louis jury on Thursday sided with 63-year-old Deborah Giannecchini of Modesto, California.

Talc is a mineral that is mined from deposits around the world, including the U.S. The softest of minerals, it's crushed into a white powder.

A woman's risks of developing ovarian cancer are tied to age, obesity, use of estrogen, not having children, family history and genetic anomalies. It is used in the manufacture of paints, paper, rubber, roofing and ceramic materials-and even as a food additive, in chewing gum, as a filler in capsules and pills and in many cosmetic products. St. Louis-based personal injury attorneys at Onder Law has been the primary law firm engaged in the case. A South Dakota jury in 2013 found J&J to be negligent but awarded the plaintiff no damages. The company pledged to remove 1,4-dioxane and formaldehyde from its range by 2015.
