Hillary Clinton's lead over Donald Trump narrows to 4 points

While he had routinely given about $2 million a month, as of Wednesday, he'd covered $33,000 in October campaign costs, giving nothing more - and putting him $44 million short of the $100 million overall he has repeatedly vowed to give.

Donald Trump's campaign said Friday the billionaire businessman will plunge an additional $10 million of his personal fortune into his presidential bid, after new federal filings that show Hillary Clinton with an $85 million cash advantage in the final stretch.

Neither Trump campaign spokeswoman Hope Hicks nor spokesman Jason Miller responded to emailed questions late Thursday inquiring whether Trump still planned to contribute as much as he has said he would.

Trump seized on newly public emails in which longtime Bill Clinton aide Doug Band describes overlapping relationships of the Clintons' global philanthropy and the family's private enrichment. New fundraising records show her campaign and joint accounts with Democrats had $153 million in the bank as of last week.

And more recent reports show no multimillion-dollar check has materialized even after Trump doubled down on his boast, telling CNN this week: "I will have more than $100 million in the campaign".

Trump has given his presidential campaign $56.1 million - but just $31,000 in in-kind donations in the first 19 days in October, the data show.

Trump is down to his last $16 million - though the number is $68 million when joint fundraising committees are factored in.

"And I am prepared to go much more than that", he said.

Donald Trump has rallies in Maine, New Hampshire and Iowa.

Nate Silver, who runs statistics-driven website FiveThirtyEight.com and correctly predicted the 2012 result, says his modeling of poll numbers and wider historical trends suggests the Republican now has around a one in five chance of winning - up from the lows seen during the debates but still down sharply from the near even chance he had based just on polls earlier in the year.

White House officials say Obama will be traveling to boost Clinton almost every day until Election Day, Nov. 8. "Boy, do we have a big difference", he said of Clinton.

Mrs. Obama, one of Clinton's most effective surrogates, passionately touted Clinton's experience and denounced Trump as too divisive and thin-skinned for the White House.

He tweeted about "vote flipping" in Texas, a solidly Republican state where Clinton has been surging in polls, as she has been in other such states such as Arizona and Utah.
