North Korea missile launch fails, according to US military

North Korea has already launched more than 20 ballistic missiles this year as they attempt to boost their delivery system, according to officials.

The missile, believed to be a Musudan, is said to have been launched from the western city of Kusong.

South Korea's military has closely monitored the moves of DPRK forces, with all possibilities left open for another nuclear test and the launch of a long-range ballistic missile.

The U.S. Strategic Command said the failed launch at occurred at 6:30 a.m.

"Any attack on the United States or its allies will be defeated, and any use of nuclear weapons will be met with an effective and overwhelming response". The US, South Korea and Japan are considering additional sanctions of their own.

“We need to ensure, working together, that the DPRK pays a price for its risky actions, even — and I want to emphasize this — (as) we work for the peaceful denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, ” Kerry said, using the abbreviation for the Norths official name, Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea.

South Korean Defense Minister Han Min-koo said the North Korean nuclear and missile programme was "like a dagger against our throats".

Washington sees the US-built THAAD system as protection against North Korea's pursuit of missile and nuclear technology.

Presidential debate with Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and Republican nominee Donald Trump
Trump, meanwhile, will have a hard path to stitch together the Electoral College majority he needs to win. In the head-to-head matchup, Clinton (49 percent) is leading with seven points over Trump (42 percent).

South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se highlighted a need for "an updated U.S".

During a recent meeting with South Korean diplomats in Washington, US Secretary of State John Kerry warned North Korea of strong retaliation if it launches a nuclear attack on South Korea or the US.

"They can fly to Korea in a few hours", said Troy University global relations professor Daniel Pinkston, author of "The North Korean Ballistic Missile Program".

The US has also urged the Kim Jong-un regime to "suspend all activities related to its ballistic missile programme" and reaffirmed its willingness to go to the United Nations to impose even greater punishments for such "provocations".

The Musudan ballistic missile is believed to have a range between 2,500 and 4,000 kilometers, reports AFP, capable of reaching USA military operations on Guam if operational. The Musudan is a mid-range ballistic missile with a maximum distance of some 35-hundred kilometers.

North Korea said no one could dispute a sovereign nation's right to peacefully develop satellites and stated all other countries, including the United States, should fall under similar scrutiny for space development.

Despite the string of failures, some experts believe the missile is moving swiftly towards operational deployment.According to John Schilling, an aerospace engineer specialising in rocket propulsion, the aggressive launch schedule, while multiplying the risk of failure, also increases the information gleaned from each test.
