Haiyan-like deluge feared as super typhoon nears Philippines

Aid agencies were on standby on Wednesday to respond to the strongest typhoon to threaten the Philippines in three years, which was due to make landfall later in the day with widespread damage expected. Our chapters in areas that will be or may be affected greatly by the typhoon are already on high alert.

President Rodrigo Duterte, who was in China for a state visit, said the government had prepared for any possible destruction and loss of life but hoped that it would not be as bad as predicted. But we are ready. Weathermen predict that storm will be much weaker by that time but it will still have the potential of triggering flooding rains. Those in these areas, you are in danger.

The Filipino disaster risk management agency said the typhoon would sweep across the northern parts of the Philippines' main island of Luzon, affecting more than 10 million people.

Typhoon Haima, which was packing sustained winds of 225 kilometers (140 miles) per hour and gusts of up to 315 kph (195 mph), was tracked 275 kilometers (170 miles) over the Philippine Sea and was expected to slam into coast around midnight Wednesday, the Associated Press reports.

Authorities warned coastal communities to expect storm surges of up to five meters (16 feet).

The storm surge and winds near the center of Haima will be catastrophic, but the area of the coastline it's expected to hit is sparsely populated.

At least 22 die as major fire breaks out in Bhubaneswar hospital
Sources said the toll may further go up as numerous injured being treated at different hospitals were in critical conditions. The cause of the fire has been blamed on an electrical short-circuit, but there is no official confirmation yet.

In its latest update, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, or PAGASA, said Super Typhoon Haima, known locally as Super Typhoon Lawin, is located about 136 miles east-southeast of Cagayan province's Tuguegarao City.

It is the fourth storm to hit the region in the past month. The exposed archipelago deals with about 20 major storms every year, many of them causing casualties.

The typhoon is expected to hit as many as 2.7 million people across seven Philippine provinces. After Cagayan, Haima is forecast to blow across the mountainous province of Apayao and then lash Ilocos Norte province before exiting into the South China Sea Thursday morning.

"We are possibly dealing with a typhoon that is even stronger than Typhoon Yolanda", said executive secretary Salvador Medialdea, referring to the local name for Haiyan, a 2013 Typhoon that killed over 7,000 people and displaced more than 5 million others.

Super Typhoon Haima could be one of the strongest typhoons ever to hit the disaster-stricken country.
