US welcomes India's move to sign Paris climate deal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said his government will ratify the agreement October 2, coinciding with the birth anniversary of India's independence leader Mohandas Gandhi.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said earlier this month that 60 countries, responsible for around 48 percent of the global carbon emissions, had joined the pact. "India will do it on Gandhi Jayanti on October 2", Modi said while addressing the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) national executive meet here.

Poland's president will sign off on the Paris climate deal to curb global warming within days, the country's environment minister said on Friday, boosting an European Union push for its adoption ahead of United Nations climate talks in November.

While Western countries, including the U.S., had been insisting on an early ratification of the pact by India, New Delhi had been seeking more time to complete its national processes as it feared that any hasty decision may impact its developmental projects.

India accounts for roughly 4.5 per cent share in the global green house gas emissions. The impact of the ratification on sectors like power, aviation, automobiles among others too played a role in India's cautiousness in signing the deal. At the moment formal approval from countries representing 7.5 per cent in global emissions is still needed. This would mean installation of 175 gigawatts of renewable power capacity by 2022.

More Brexit blues: OECD halves United Kingdom growth forecast
The Paris-based organisation downgraded global GDP expectations to 2.9% this year, down from an earlier forecast of 3%. That leaves the United Kingdom central bank on track to cut interest rates again in November to slightly above zero.

India's leader says his country will ratify the Paris Agreement on climate change early next month.

"Modi noted that the world and coastal areas in particular are concerned for ways to ensure the global temperature doesn't rise by another two per cent".

"It was unnecessary to link climate agreement to either NSG or to US support on any other matter", added ORF Vice President and climate change consultant Samir Saran.

"Morocco, which has just filed the instruments of ratification of the Paris Agreement, calls on other states parties to speed up the process of ratification of this instrument to ensure its entry into force in the shortest possible time", he stressed.
