Poland Now Most Common Country of Origin for UK Foreign-Born Residents

There was a "statistically significant increase" in the non-UK born population of the United Kingdom between 2014 and 2015, rising from 8.3 million to 8.6 million, the Office for National Statistics said. That is a rise of 41,000 in a year, and means that Poles now account for almost one in 10 of the country's 8.6 million foreign-born residents.

Poland is the most common non-UK country of birth and Polish is the most common non-British nationality.

The next most common foreign contingents nationwide were from Pakistan, Ireland, Germany and Romania - with a total rise to 220,000 - although in London, Indians still head the overseas league table.

Net migration is the difference between the number of people coming to the United Kingdom for at least a year and those leaving.

The previous set of information published in May showed net migration running slightly higher at 334,000 in the year to December, with the European Union making up some 184,000 of the total.

Polish women accounted for the largest number of births.

She said the UK's population continued to increase between 2014 and 2015, driven by "significant increases in both the non-UK born and non-British national population of the UK".

Pakistan was the most common country of birth for fathers born outside the United Kingdom, followed by Poland and India.
