A portion of Interstate 15, the main route between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, has been closed.

The authorities announced on Tuesday that Damin Pashilk, 40, was facing 17 counts of arson and was suspected of involvement in numerous other fires in the Lake County area over the past year. The fire start quickly burned through 28 square miles and forced thousands of evacuations.

Berlant says there was a pattern established with 16 other fires around Lake County over the a year ago, and his agency believes Pashilk is connected to all of them.

In a little over a year, fires have destroyed more than 1,400 of the 36,000 housing units in all of Lake County.

It also burned what appear to be several ranch outbuildings and forced evacuations in and around Lytle Creek.

"No joke, we were literally being chased by the fire", a tearful April Christy said in a voice choked with emotion as she and her mother sat in their minivan in an evacuation center parking lot in Fontana.

He is now accused of setting the Clayton Fire along with 16 other fires around Lake County in the past year.

What started off as a small brush fire has turned to a state of emergency in southern California as a wildfire rage. But they did not have enough evidence to make an arrest until the weekend blaze ripped through Lower Lake.

Flash flood watch issued for Alabama Gulf coast
Heavy rain is expected to continue Friday and begin tapering off early Saturday. This morning, water built up on an interstate, causing heavy delays in traffic.

The raging fires spread across California is part of the annual fire season brought by extreme hot weather combined with dry bushes in the forest that has become worse over the years because of climate change.

Wildfires are common in California in the summer months, but 2016 has been particularly hard with almost 4,000 fires as of August 13 that also caused a number of casualties.

Cajon Pass is about 60 miles east of Los Angeles.

A 10-day-old wildfire in the San Bernardino Mountains east of Los Angeles is finally fully surrounded.

"We're seeing very aggressive fire behaviour, burning through the brush", Bob Poole, a spokesman for the United States forest service, said in an interview with KTLA, a Los Angeles television station.

Neither the California Department of Forestry, which led the investigation that resulted in Pashilk's arrest Monday, nor the Lake County sheriff or district attorney would discuss what led authorities to him.

Before the latest Blue Cut Fire broke out Tuesday, 8,000 California firefighters had already been battling eight large wildfires across the state. It is 60 percent contained, but continues to threaten more than 400 structures.
