Baby with Zika-linked birth defect dies in Texas

The first Zika-related death in Texas has been confirmed in Harris County, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services.

The state of Texas has reported 97 cases of Zika, including two infants born with microcephaly, however, Tuesday's death is the first to occur in the US' second-largest state (both by population and size).

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said nationwide there are 15 cases of Zika-related birth defects and six pregnancies losses associated with infection.

While this is a travel-associated case, Shah said, prevention is key to reducing the risk of the virus.

Rick Scott says there are 4 new infections of the Zika virus likely transmitted by mosquitoes, bringing the total in the state to 21.

It is the only U.S. state so far to report that mosquitoes are actively transmitting the virus.

With the latest findings, 357 cases of travel related Zika have been identified in the state in addition to 17 non-travel related cases. As of now, Texas does not have any cases of Zika spreading from local mosquitoes. It's the first Zika-related death in Texas.

"I disagree with those who say Zika is an insignificant issue", Clinton said, referring to Donald Trump's campaign officials in Florida.

The Democratic presidential candidate toured the Borinquen Medical Center, a health clinic close to the Wynwood area. The child's mother had traveled to a Zika-infected area in Latin America.

Federal health officials have already set aside about $38 million to fight Zika in Texas, according to Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell.

It is one of only a handful of deaths caused by the Zika virus reported on the USA mainland.

Most of the cases were travel-related with the travellers infected while overseas.

Congress took their summer recess in mid-July without approving any of the $1.9 billion that President Barack Obama requested in February to develop a vaccine and control the mosquitoes that carry the virus.
