Colorado town awaits test results of pot ingredient in water

Officials told residents of a small Colorado town not to shower or drink tap water Thursday because wells have been contaminated with marijuana's intoxicating chemical.

The positive results were detected by a field testing kit but more qualitative and quantitative testing will soon show a specific result, said Captain Michael Yowell of the Sheriff's Office.

Department of Public Health and Environment spokesman Mark Salley sought to ease public concern over the contamination, reinforcing that consuming the tainted water would be extremely unlikely to cause detrimental health effects.

When sheriff's deputies investigated, Yowell said, they found signs of forced entry at the well, though it is unclear when the damage may have occurred. The reports have drawn attention from state-wide health and law enforcement agencies, with the FBI, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the local District Attorney's Office making a joint effort to investigate the case.

There are no commerical marijuana operations or retail marijuana stores, in Hugo, about 100 miles southeast of Denver.

Further tests are underway to confirm the presence of THC in the water and determine the level of contamination, according to the Post. Of course, such amount of product is more "than any of us could afford", said Fox.

Being able to sip THC-infused water from your faucets might sound like some stoner's silly dream.

Some have claimed it is impossible for THC to be found in the water, let alone a unsafe level of it. THC is relatively insoluble in water, and therefore would not mix with the water.

Yowell said investigators were aware of that but had to follow up because of the field test results.

"There is zero possibility that there's anything like THC in the Hugo water", Perrone said.

THC does not dissolve easily in water, meaning if the test results were correct in showing TCH, there was a low chance anyone would experience the symptoms of a high.

But others cast doubt on the dangers of THC-contaminated water or whether it's even possible to spike tap water with marijuana.
