Ryan: Trump made 'textbook definition of a racist comment'

Republican Sen. Mark Kirk of IL says Donald Trump's comments about a us federal judge of Mexican heritage are un-American and he can not support the presumptive presidential nominee.

"We have more likelihood of getting our policies enacted with him than we do with (Democrat Hillary Clinton)", he said.

Former Speaker of the House and rumored Trump VP pick Newt Gingrich was also critical of the statements, saying "This is one of the worst mistakes Trump has made, and I think it's inexcusable", said Gingrich on Fox News.

Paul Ryan thinks Donald Trump is a racist, but he won't rescind his endorsement.

Ryan eventually endorsed Trump, but has made it clear that he doesn't agree with everything Trump stands for - like judging people on their ethnicity.

The senator added that he has concluded Trump is not fit to be commander-in-chief and oversee thousands of nuclear weapons. "I don't think it reflects well on the Republican Party".

Trump has not backed down from his claim in an interview with CNN's Jake Tapper that the judge in the court case against Trump University was biased because of his "Mexican heritage".

Reluctant Republicans fall in line behind Donald Trump
It's far more complicated, even if you're not one of those who has quieted your doubts and hopped aboard the Trump bandwagon. An online posting past year featured a picture of Donald Trump with a comment he made about Hillary in 2012.

Ryan, speaking at an event to unveil U.S. House Republicans' policy proposals, said the comments by the Republican Party's presumptive presidential nominee were unacceptable and indefensible.

Former U.S. Rep. Joe Scarborough, R-Fla., now the host of MSNBC's Morning Joe, said on the program Tuesday that Republicans need to reconsider their support of Trump, or risk losing control of the House and Senate in the fall elections.

"It's interesting that Mike Pence has commented on every single national issue over the last four years, but now has developed a case of lockjaw", Gregg campaign spokesman Jeff Harris said. He is placing partisanship ahead of opposing what he himself identifies as "textbook" racism that "should be absolutely disavowed".

But after calling out Trump's comments, Ryan said his support of Trump's presidential run remains the same. Ryan said he has had "exhaustive" conversations with Trump about the policies and is confident Trump will likely embrace them.

Trump's attacks on US District Judge Gonzalo Curiel, who is presiding over a case involving allegations that Trump University defrauded people who signed up for courses, match most definitions of a racist comment.

"As Donald Trump has demonstrated, he's his own candidate and we've always expressed some concern about his rhetoric, and this is additional rhetoric that I have concern with". Curiel was born in IN to parents who emigrated from Mexico.

Curiel is the youngest of four children born in the U.S.to Mexican immigrants who relocated to East Chicago for work in the steel mills.
