Sox Falls to the Jays in Series Opener

Sox Falls to the Jays in Series Opener

The Blue Jays have placed shortstop Troy Tulowitzki on the 15-day DL with a quad strain, Brendan Kennedy of the Toronto Star tweets.

Donaldson put the Jays up 2-1 when he doubled in the third to drive in Ezequiel Carrera, who led off with a single. Russell Martin then drove in Smoak with a double to tie the game, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a game-winning infield single by Devon Travis.

ODOR BAN REDUCED: Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor started serving his for punching Toronto's Bautista after the penalty was reduced from eight to seven games.

Kelly gave up solo homers to Donaldson in the first inning and Justin Smoak in the fifth. Against teams in the AL East, the Blue Jays have a SU record of 10-9.

Boston's Xander Bogaerts was 1-for-4, extending his career-best hitting streak to 20 games, the longest active run in the majors. That last run was aided by some poor defense from the Blue Jays, as Michael Saunders fell down while chasing a Dustin Pedroia fly ball that turned into a double, and Pedroia later scored on Shaw's hit.

Blue Jays starter Aaron Sanchez left the game after 6 2/3 innings with Toronto leading 5-4.

Marcus Stroman tied his shortest outing of the season, also against Boston, surrendering seven runs on 11 hits while striking out five.

Tom Brady to appeal 'Deflatgate' suspension again
Solicitor General Theodore Olson, who appeared earlier on Monday on ABC to announce the appeal. A three judge panel from the second circuit ruled to uphold the suspension late last month.

Pushing the right-hander back to face the Red Sox seems like a wise move for other reasons as well.

Tulowitzki missed 46 games in 2008 with a left quadriceps strain, but he said this injury is less serious and he "definitely" expects to return after the requisite 15 days.

Tulowitzki, a five-time All-Star, is batting a career low.204/.289/.383 for the.500 Jays. since being acquired by Toronto in last year's trade with the Rockies he has batted just.221 in 87 games.

Darwin Barney started at shortstop in Tulowitzki's place and was excellent, doubling and tripling in a 2-for-3 day and making multiple defensive plays worthy of noting. It was Toronto's 23rd home game of the season.

According to oddsmakers from online sports book BetDSI, the Blue Jays are -122 money line favorites over the Red Sox, who have odds of +112 to pull off the small upset in Toronto this afternoon.

In his last start against the Red Sox, Dickey was only able to make it through 4.2 innings and he took the loss. He is looking for his first win against them since going 4-0 in 2014.
