President Obama Revokes U.S. Arms ban on Vietnam

The US has chose to "completely lift" its embargo on trade in lethal arms with the Southeast Asian country, President Tran Dai Quang of Vietnam has said, Reuters reports.

Vietnam's attractiveness to US companies has been enhanced by its decision to sign on to the TPP trade pact.

The two countries announced business deals worth $16 billion as they seek to further expand trade.

The only war America has lost, the conflict killed 57,000 American military personnel and as many as 2 million Vietnamese military and civilians. He lived in Hanoi during the Vietnam War, and recalled the bombing and suffering Vietnamese endured. He singled out U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who served in the Vietnam War, for special mention.

Obama's visit is also meant to highlight the US-led Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Obama is seeking to strike this balance with Vietnam amid Chinese efforts to strengthen claims to disputed territory in the South China Sea, one of the world's most important waterways.

Even so, while bilateral U.S.-Vietnam ties are clearly warming, there is still an air of mutual suspicion in military circles, as highlighted by Hiebert and his colleague Phuong Nguyen in a commentary published by the CSIS. It's a big leap for both countries. He then met with the recently elected chairwoman of Vietnam's National Assembly, Nyguyen Thi Kim Ngan, at a rustic stilt house on the grounds of the presidential palace which Ho Chi Minh, the iconic communist leader and president of former North Vietnam, used as a residence. While that seems unlikely, President Obama's visit, the third by a U.S. President since 2000, and the lifting of the embargo shows that history can change relatively quickly and that former enemies can become, if not allies, at the very least nations that we have more in common than just having fought a war against. "And I can also announce that the United States is fully lifting the ban on the sale of military equipment to Vietnam that has been in place for some fifty years".

Congressional Republicans grapple with new Trump reality
Clinton said on CBS' "Face the Nation" she's been hearing from Republicans who are thinking about supporting her campaign . But Ryan said Monday that a third-party or independent bid by conservatives in 2016 "would be a disaster for our party".

Grevatt at IHS Jane's deemed it unlikely that a U.S.-Vietnam deal would automatically lead to a regional arms race, saying it was most likely that Vietnamese purchases from the U.S. would be supported by U.S. aid.

"There's a number of ways we could put additional pressure on the Vietnamese", he said.

Human Rights Watch said Obama had "jettisoned what remained of USA leverage to improve human rights in Vietnam".

Still, Obama faces pressure from human rights groups and lawmakers of both parties on Capitol Hill to push Vietnam to release all 100 prisoners, including Montagnard Christians, a persecuted ethnic minority, bloggers and dissidents.

The Vietnam War ended in April 1975 with the fall of Saigon - now called Ho Chi Minh City - after the United States withdrew combat forces and the North Vietnamese launched a massive offensive to reunite their homeland under communism.

Interesting China was raised as a concern for President Obama and his hosts in Hanoi considering the President has pointed to China as a model for domestic gun control measures.
