Islamic State bombing of Shiite area in Baghdad kills at least 63

Two suicide bombings claimed by Islamic State in a town near Baghdad killed two policemen and wounded eight others on Thursday, police and medics said, a day after Islamic State bombs left at least 80 people dead in the Iraqi capital.

The ultra-hardline Sunni jihadist group, which considers Shi'ites apostates, claimed a twin suicide bombing in Sadr City in February that killed 70 people.

Iraqi forces backed by a USA -led military coalition have retaken large swaths of Iraqi territory from Islamic State in recent months.

In recent years, bombings and shooting attacks, which often target civilians, have become a common occurrence in war-torn Iraq, especially capital Baghdad.

The worst of the bombings struck the frequently targeted Sadr City area of northern Baghdad at around 10:00 am (07:00 GMT), killing at least 64 people and wounding 82 others, officials said.

So far, there have been no claims of responsibility.

"They protect and fortify the Green Zone but not their own sons", he said, of the heavily-secured sector on the banks of the Tigris that Iraq's government inherited from occupying US forces.

On April 30, hundreds of al-Sadr's supporters stormed the heavily fortified Green Zone in the heart of Baghdad and broke into the parliament building.

The largest of the vehicle bombings killed 63 people at an outdoor market in the Shiite Muslim neighborhood of Sadr City.

One blast hit the entrance of the Shiite neighborhood of Kadhimiya, which has been repeatedly targeted, killing at least 15 and wounding 33 others, police sources told Reuters. The attack also wounded 34.

Later Wednesday, a suicide bomber detonated in a busy square in the Shiite neighborhood of al-Kadhimiya in Baghdad, killing 17 people, and a suicide auto bomber exploded at a checkpoint manned by Shiites in the Sunni neighborhood of al-Jamia, killing 12. "It pains us to see the continuing bloodletting and loss of life, particularly among civilians who are paying a high price as a result of bombings and the armed clashes", Jan Kubi, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, said in a press release announcing the latest statistics.

It continues to hold sway over large parts of the country, including Iraq's second largest city, Mosul, 225 miles northwest of Baghdad.

He added: "If they [the government] can't protect us, then they have to let us do the job".

"They regard the Shia Muslims as heretics, and they're seeking to undermine the government's efforts to maintain security", he says. Many members of security forces were also among those killed and injured, sources told AFP. The incident raised fears that the Islamic State would capitalize on the unrest by launching attacks on the capital.

Using another name for the group, Comey said that "the ISIL brand has lost significant power" and cited a decrease in Americans traveling or attempting to travel to fight with the group - from between six to eight a month in the past two years to about one a month now.
