Arsenal says it opposes breakaway European league for elite

The five powerful football men were meeting Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, who is keen to throw his $4billion fortune behind a European Super League.

The Barclays Premier League title race is still wide open as it enters the final straight and it remains to be seen which country's flag will be draped over the championship-winning manager in three months' time.

Old Trafford executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck, Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis, City's chief executive Ferran Soriano and Liverpool's Ian Ayre all emerged smiling and shaking hands after the clandestine meeting.

He is behind the International Champions Cup, which takes place during pre-season and features a number of the world's leading teams.

Arsenal have announced they oppose a European Super League after reports of secret talks over a possible breakaway from the Champions League, while Chelsea also reject plans, Goal has learned.

Raikkonen trials cockpit halo
Vettel said he was "not concerned" following the reliability problems Raikkonen suffered. He then switched to the ultrasoft tyre and set another fast lap at a time of 1:22.765.

Arsenal had adopted a similar stance earlier in the day, with a spokesman telling Press Association Sport: "We are strongly opposed to any breakaway".

Leicester City were unable to capitalise on a brilliant opportunity to distance themselves from the chasing Premier League pack on Tuesday, as the Foxes were held to a 2-2 draw by visiting West Brom.

For example, Manchester United - one of the clubs at the meeting - are understood to be comfortable with the existing landscape and fixture schedule, so much so that domestically the club even supports retaining FA Cup replays.

Arsene Wenger said said in 2009 that he believes a European Super League could become a reality within the next 10 years. The European Club Associaton have always insisted that bigger clubs' automatic inclusion every year would be the best course of action for UEFA - and the more it looks like these clubs are discussing alternatives, the more likely it is that UEFA will cave and give them what they want.
