Syria aid convoys prepare to head to besieged areas

The United Nations has demanded unhindered access to all besieged areas of the country, where it says hundreds of thousands of people are trapped by fighting and deliberate blockades by Syria's various warring sides.

UN Special Envoy Staffan de Mistura, who won the green light at talks with Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem, said on Tuesday that the world body would test the government commitment to allow access on Wednesday but gave no details.

But the most modern Russian aircraft, such as the Sukhoi Su-35 fighter, are being used to show German planes "that unlike the global anti-Isis coalition, they're up there at the invitation of the legitimate Syrian government", Wundrak said.

"UNICEF staff are working with our partners to verify the numberof casualties, including children killed and injured in the attacks", spokesman Kieran Dwyer said. The dead included patients.

One of the strikes hit a hospital supported by charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF), killing at least 11 people and prompting widespread condemnation.

The previous death toll was 11.

To achieve the goal, the Syrian government and opposition need to build trust after almost six years of bloody conflict in the country.

"But look, Russian warplanes swarm there and thousands, tens of thousands of are being oppressed", Erdo─čan said February 17 in an address in Ankara.

The YPG has been the main force pushing back the jihadists across northern Syria, aided by an intense US-led air campaign. "Weren't we to act together?"

Zika Virus Prompts Caution from Health Department

"We will also hope then to have progress in reaching the poor people inside of Dei ez-Zor which is as you know besieged by the Islamic State", Egeland highlighted, adding "that can only be done by airdrops and the World Food Programme (WFP) has now a concrete plan of doing so". "The convoys contained life-saving aid including food, medical supplies and equipment, vaccines, water and sanitation items for nearly 100,000 people in need of aid".

By mid-afternoon, scores of trucks belonging to the Syrian Red Crescent were still parked on the side of the highway at the entrance to Damascus. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly on the issue. It also comes just days before an internationally agreed pause in fighting is due to take effect.

Turkey on Tuesday called for foreign ground forces to deploy in Syria, part of a longstanding push by the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member for a more robust response to the conflict.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed on Wednesday that Turkey would never accept the creation of a Kurdish stronghold in northern Syria, saying there was "no question" of Turkey ending its shelling.

Until now, Turkish authorities have prevented the majority of Syrians from passing into Turkey.

Turkey has long called for a safe zone in northern Syria but has not been able to secure the backing of the USA and other allies.

At a news conference, she said such an agreement would be "a sign of good will" and would put many people at ease. She first aired her idea in an interview published Monday, without giving details.

Syria's government has approved access to seven besieged areas, including the city of Madaya where dozens of people are thought to have died from starvation, a spokeswoman for the UN's humanitarian affairs office said.

AP news agency has live updates on the situation. The trucks started moving in convoys Wednesday, and by evening at least some of them had reached all but Fouaa and Kfarya, relief workers and independent monitors said.
