New Zealand offers to take Australia's unwanted refugees

New Zealand offers to take Australia's unwanted refugees

The issue of their fate was raised in annual talks between Australian prime minister Malcolm Turnbull and his visiting New Zealand counterpart.

Today, the Australian Government announced that New Zealanders will now have a pathway to citizenship, through permanent residence, if they have been living there for over five years and have met the income threshold.

"This will enable a large number of New Zealanders who are here and have been working here for five years, to be able to apply for citizenship", he said.

Giving some New Zealanders an easier path to citizenship in Australia is a step in the right direction but John Key must now work hard to restore the reciprocal rights Kiwis once enjoyed, Labour's Foreign Affairs Spokesman David Shearer says.

He called New Zealand troops in the region "a great credit to the Anzac tradition", and said they were "very important in terms of building confidence in the Iraqi government".

Following this date, Kiwis had to apply for the SCV, a indefinite temporary visa that allowed them to stay and work in Australia as long as they remained a New Zealand citizen.

In a speech to the gathered media Obama joked that he's hoping his team claim one more championship before he leaves office. It is the third National Hockey League title for the franchise in the past six years, they also won in 2010 and 2013.

"We've made it crystal-clear that people who are deported can pursue their appeals from New Zealand, so they are not prejudiced in their appeal by being back in New Zealand", Mr Turnbull said.

"So you can see the policy is being administered in a very thoughtful and practical way".

The deal follows tensions over the deportation of New Zealand criminals under laws introduced previous year.

New Zealand is prepared to accept some asylum seekers that Australia has sent to detention camps on impoverished Pacific island nations.

But Mr Turnbull appeared to dismiss the offer, saying the government did not want to give people smugglers "marketing opportunities" to recruit asylum seekers from countries such as Bangladesh, Iran and Afghanistan to embark on the risky journey.

He emphasised that the group, which was subject to a failed High Court challenge and who are in Australia for medical treatment or accompanying family members, would be assessed for return to Nauru on a case-by-case basis.
