Apple has issued a fix for the odd iPhone Error 53 glitch

The Fruity Cargo Cult said a new version of iOS 9.2.1, available over iTunes, will restore mobiles frozen with an "Error 53" message.

Customers who believe they have paid for out-of-warranty device replacement as a result of the issue are encouraged to contact Apple Support for reimbursement advice.

If your iPhone was rendered inoperable, you can connect it to iTunes on a Mac or PC, install the iOS update and recover the use of the iPhone.

A spokesman for Apple told the website TechCrunch that the error was the result of a factory test and was never meant to affect customers. When iPhone is serviced by an authorized Apple service provider or Apple retail store for changes that affect the touch ID sensor, the pairing is re-validated. Note that the update is for those that update their phones via iTunes only (those that update over-the-air wouldn't have run into Error 53 to begin with). And for that matter, the Download iOS 9.0 - 9.2.1 Information page does not explicitly mention the change either, and it is still dated 19 January.

If Touch ID was not working prior to Error 53, it still won't work.

Obama honors Chicago Blackhawks for Stanley Cup hat trick
In a speech to the gathered media Obama joked that he's hoping his team claim one more championship before he leaves office. It is the third National Hockey League title for the franchise in the past six years, they also won in 2010 and 2013.

What you need to do next is to force-restart the iPhone by holding the lock and the home buttons pressed for at least ten seconds.

Previously, Apple had said the error was a "security measure" taken to prevent fraudulent transactions. When that happens, Error 53 would trigger (and brick your device) the next time you updated iOS. But many had suggested that would be the correct way to fix the problem, since the Touch ID sensor unlocks numerous phones most sensitive features and the error keeps it from being tampered with. An option in iTunes to Respore or update will appear and you will have to click on the update.

If you do encounter Error 53, Apple has laid out steps on how to get your device up and running.

While this fix will make an Error 53-afflicted device operable again, Touch ID will not function, as it shouldn't, given that its pairing with the secure enclave has been compromised.

Apple has a lot of support at the moment for its stance on encryption and refusing the Federal Bureau of Investigation access to an iPhone's contents, but it's only a couple of weeks since the company was seen in a less favorable light.
